What made it such a struggle to root for Ms. Marvel?

Disney Plus’ Ms. Marvel, released a year ago, follows Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American 16-year-old who discovers her superpowers and learns to balance her life as a teenager living in Jersey City with her new role as a superhero.

The show generated quite a buzz among fans. While many enjoyed it, there's a prevailing opinion that the inclusion of villains on the show was unnecessary.

In a Reddit discussion, many fans expressed the same opinion suggesting that a simpler and more focused approach centered around the protagonist's personal journey, rather than high-stakes conflicts, would be better for the show.

According to fans, the heart of the show should have been Kamala Khan's exploration of her powers, culture, and identity. Instead of elaborate villainous plots, the series should’ve been of smaller-scale adventures, like Kamala saving people from peril or thwarting local crimes.

These low-stakes encounters would have provided ample opportunities for character development and a gradual understanding of her abilities.

While multiverses and secret societies are indeed exciting, fans felt that these elements detracted from the show's core essence and overshadowed Kamala's personal journey.

By streamlining the narrative and focusing on her growth as Ms. Marvel, the show could have captured the true spirit of the character, allowing audiences to connect with her on a deeper level.

Many fans think that the show should have left big threats for a potential second season, while the first season should have concentrated on Kamala's local heroics and her journey towards self-acceptance. In this way, the show could have built a solid foundation for her future storylines.

At the moment, season 2 of Ms. Marvel hasn’t been confirmed yet. If we get to see Kamala in her own series once again, fans are crossing their fingers that the show will fix the problems in season 2.

Iman Vellani is going to reprise her role as Ms. Marvel in the upcoming MCU movie, The Marvels, set to release on November 10, 2023. This anticipated movie also holds the potential for significant character development for Ms. Marvel.
