Mr. & Mrs. Smith TV Series Update Raises Concerns Among Fans
The show might just be renewed for a second season, but fans believe it would only damage the story.
Summary:
- The Mr. & Mrs. Smith TV series somehow managed to succeed the 2005 movie of the same name and deliver an absolutely stunning story
- The final episode wrapped up the plot nicely, providing a conclusion that is open to interpretation
- However, a new update suggests that the show may get a second season, which could ruin that charming ambiguity
Amazon Prime Video 's newly released Mr. & Mrs. Smith TV series, all episodes of which premiered on February 2, 2024, was an unexpected but welcome surprise and has received much praise from critics and fans alike.
The series came seemingly out of nowhere and managed to deliver a completely different and fresh take on the core idea of the 2005 feature film of the same name starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, even surpassing its predecessor in many ways.
The Show's Perfect Finale Is In Danger Of Being Tainted
The final episode provided a beautiful conclusion that is completely open to interpretation, depending on what you think is best for the characters.
However, a new update from the show's co-creator Francesca Sloane suggests that the finale's intriguing ambiguity may not last long, for better or worse.
In a recent interview with TV Insider, Sloane revealed that depending on the success of the debut season, the show could definitely be renewed for a second season, as the creators already have ideas for it.
While fans have enjoyed the first season, they point out that the prospect of Mr. & Mrs. Smith being turned into a multi-season TV series seems completely unnecessary, as it could easily do the project more harm than good.
Beware of spoilers ahead.
Continuing The Show Would Be A Controversial Decision
As mentioned above, we never learned if Donald Glover's John and Maya Erskine's Jane survived their final confrontation with other agents, as all that was shown was three flashes of gunfire.
If it turns out that they did indeed survive the encounter, it would severely damage the overall impression of the season 1 finale, as many fans felt it was rather poetic that they met their end.
Explaining it would also completely remove the ambiguity that made the ending feel so great in the first place, as for now it is entirely up to you to choose to believe what happened.
However, if the second season were to revolve around a completely different John & Jane duo (since the names are just aliases, after all), fans are concerned that it would feel repetitive, since the premise would be virtually identical to the first season.
Although there has been no official confirmation that the show will be renewed for season 2, it seems within the realm of possibility given the positive reception the first season got.
