Most Inventive New Sci-Fi with 84% Tomatometer Finally Available on Streaming
Don’t miss out on this unique venture into the darkness from the comfort of your home.
Like with many popular genres, the sci-fi thriller niche is oversaturated with movies, TV shows, books, and even video games. Everyone and their family dog need to create a dark and gripping mystery, and the best examples of such stories are widely known… For the most part. This unique movie wasn’t as fortunate despite its highly inventive and twisted approach to the genre and the story it tells.
Monolith Does the (Nearly) Impossible
Few horror movies manage to be truly terrifying without using the most expected tropes of the genre. 2008’s Pontypool was one such example, putting its viewers through the sheer terror of being stuck in the middle of a zombie apocalypse through nothing but a radio host’s narrative; 2022’s Monolith, boasting a bigger budget, achieved the same effect through different means.
A debut directorial work by Matt Vesely, this movie takes you on a mind-boggling trip through a dark conspiracy and the protagonist’s twisted mind. Exclusively referred to as The Interviewer, she’s a disgraced journalist who starts a podcast about all things unknown in an attempt to salvage her career and stumbles upon something strange.
Inspired by her listeners’ reports, she begins her investigation. All lines of the unspeakable conspiracy The Interviewer uncovers lead her back home, and soon, she starts questioning her own reality as her mind starts slipping into the darkness the more she learns. Monolith tells its story almost exclusively through the interviews the main character conducts, but it manages to keep you on the edge of your seat.
It’s Time to Give Monolith Its Due
On Rotten Tomatoes, this outstanding Australian movie raked up an impressive 84% Critic Score and the Certified Fresh status, making it stand out from other first-timers. All that while having a single on-screen actor, Lily Sullivan, who puts on an amazing performance portraying a dedicated woman slipping into her own past’s darkness.
“Matt Vesely’s impressive debut ably stakes out its own territory, not least in the vast distances covered by a single on-screen actor and a handful of vocal performances,” Guardian’s Phil Hoad wrote, joining the choir of impressed critics.
Recently, Monolith joined Sky Cinema and NOW Cinema, making it yet more accessible to stream at home. Alternatively, you can watch it on Apple TV and Prime Video.
