Most Heartbreaking Rick & Morty Moments
So, this show wasn't supposed just to make us laugh all the time?
Although Rick & Morty is the show that often delivers laughs and absurdity, it also has moments of profound sadness and emotional depth.
Along with mind-bending adventures across multiple dimensions and never-ending dark humor, the animated series has provided viewers with enough moments of deep reflection as well.
Let's dive deeper into the saddest moments in the history of Rick & Morty's existence.
When Rick And Morty Bury Themselves
In Rick Potion #9, Morty's love potion goes awry and turns everyone into mutated monsters. The most shocking part was when Rick revealed that they had to leave their reality and bury their alternate selves in the backyard.
Nothing prepared the audience for such a turn of events, and the fact that it was the first time Morty had to abandon his reality with everything he knew and loved was truly heartbreaking.
When Sleepy Gary Died
Sleepy Gary was the Gary who finally fit into the Smith family. He finally became a great husband and father, a respected son-in-law for Rick, and an unforgettable lover for the real Jerry.
However, Sleepy Gary appeared to be nothing more than just an alien parasite that created false memories with the family, including the heartwarming barbecue with them.
The possibility of a happy Smith family crashed our dreams. But it definitely broke Jerry more as he lost the love of his life (himself?)
When Mr. Poopybutthole Was Shot
Along with Sleepy Gary, the Total Rickall episode could take another great character from us. Mr. Poopybutthole was shot by Beth after long disputes between the Smiths about his origin.
But Mr. Poopybutthole turned out to be more than real. He luckily survived and surprisingly appeared in the next few episodes of the show, but the scene of him slowly dying tore us apart.
When Morty Saw His Memories
Morty's Mind Blowers episode revealed that Rick has a secret chamber under the garage where he keeps the tubes of Morty's erased memories.
After they start viewing them again, the audience becomes the witnesses of fast-changing shorts of Morty's past mistakes that he once wished to forget.
From the memory of him getting Mr. Lunas, a guidance counselor at his school, to commit suicide to Beth choosing Summer over Morty. The episode is full of weird and sad moments that were hard to keep up remembering
When Rick Sacrificed Himself
After Rick and Morty get stuck between dimensional journeys, Rick sacrifices himself to save his grandson, floating in open space and making the viewers believe that this is the end for the mad scientist.
The scene was truly heartbreaking as that's when the viewers learned two things — a) Rick wasn't as selfish as we thought and b) He would accept his death peacefully as if that was everything he ever wanted.
