We thought that maybe, we’ll get his idea later down the line. By far, we haven’t.
Gunn Gave the First Look at His New Superman
Taking Superman’s famous cap from Henry Cavill was met with a backlash from fans, and the situation didn’t get any better once it was revealed that the new Man of Steel star would be David Corenswet — Cavill’s skinnier lookalike. From that point forth, James Gunn’s decision has stopped making any sense in fans’ eyes.
Recently, Gunn dropped the first real look at his new Superman. The director and DC boss shared a picture of David Corenswet putting on the iconic suit against the backdrop of a dramatic and flashy superhero battle behind his window… And it fixed nothing. The picture only raised even more eyebrows in the light of Gunn’s stance.
New Superman Looks Just Like His Predecessor
When David Corenswet was still skinny, it was somewhat easier to guess James Gunn’s idea behind the recast: perhaps, he wanted a skinny Superman — who’s to judge him? But now that Corenswet is all buffed and pumped and got the new Superman haircut… He looks exactly like Henry Cavill. It’s just uncanny, really.
What’s the point of switching Henry for a Henry-looking actor if there’s pretty much no way to tell the difference, especially from certain angles? What’s even worse is that the promo picture doesn’t inspire too much hope: as one commenter quipped, it somehow “looks more CW than the actual CW suit,” which is just hilarious.
As Evil James Gunn would have said, “We should probably keep the beloved Superman actor and capitalize on his popularity as we reboot the controversial franchise no one believes in anymore.” Good thing our James Gunn isn’t evil.
