Speaking of Westerns, Taylor Sheridan 's Yellowstone is probably the most prominent representative on contemporary television. This is not surprising, because despite its modern setting, the series is an excellent, gritty drama. And it shows that the picturesque expanses of the United States, just like 150 years ago, are not full of brave, romanticized lawmen, but bloody showdowns, corrupt politicians and ranching families defending their land with the most brutal methods.

In this way, Sheridan's flagship project wittily collides the spirit of the Old West and the New West, while deliberately maintaining no substantive distinction between them.

The final episodes of Yellowstone Season 5 are still to come, and so we Western aficionados clearly need to find some way to kill time. For example, by watching other equally fascinating works of the genre.

Let's face it, most Westerns are rather male-centric. This is also true of Yellowstone: only Kelly Reilly's Beth carries significant weight, both in the family and in the narrative of the series as a whole. Godless, on the other hand, shows that no bloodthirsty man can survive a rugged woman protecting her own home.

The plot of the series follows young outlaw Roy Goode, who is being persecuted by his own gang. He must take refuge in the small town of New Bell, New Mexico, which is populated mostly by women. After sheltering Goode, the townspeople face a threat in the form of his boss and accomplices and must defend New Bell against the gangsters with guns drawn.

3. Longmire (2012, 6 seasons, Rotten Tomatoes score 88%)

In addition to Yellowstone, two other notable neo-Western series are Justified and Longmire, both about extraordinary lawmen with a strong sense of justice who are not afraid to use brutal methods on the edge of the law in the spirit of the Old West.

Based on the novels by Craig Johnson, the series follows Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor), a well-respected sheriff in the fictional Absaroka County, Wyoming, who fights illegal businesses in the county and especially on the Cheyenne Reservation. Notably, the series includes flashbacks of the protagonist in Denver, juxtaposing illegal activities in major cities and beyond. In addition, the series focuses on the struggles of the Cheyenne people.

2. Wynonna Earp (2016, 4 seasons, Rotten Tomatoes score 92%)

This vibrant series is not a typical example of the genre, as it skillfully combines western, horror, and fantasy elements. Based on the comic book series of the same name by Beau Smith, Wynonna Earp follows the great-great-granddaughter of legendary gunslinger Wyatt Earp, who, instead of fighting lawbreakers, brings justice to the demons of Hell.

1. Song of the Bandits (2023, 1 season, Rotten Tomatoes score 100%)

Like many other countries (think of the films of legendary Italian director Sergio Leone, or even the Japanese takes on the genre), South Korea has kept up with the trend. A new Korean series takes place in the 1920s in the region bordering Korea and Manchuria, to which many Koreans have migrated to escape the Japanese occupation. It is a lawless frontier, yet the refugees unite to resist the invaders.
