Is there even a point in moving forward?

Summary:

  • Miss Scarlet and the Duke is a PBS period crime drama that has now been renewed for Season 5.
  • However, Stuart Martin, who portrayed the Duke, has left the show, so it will have to be renamed Miss Scarlet.
  • Disappointed, fans began to turn their backs on the show already.

While many Miss Scarlet and The Duke viewers, unhappy with the Duke's minor role in season 4, were clamoring for a major change in the future, no one really expected the PBS show to pull a Grey's Anatomy and get rid of the title character.

When someone is so important to the show's storyline that they make it to the title, you would think the story would never go on without them. Miss Scarlet and the Duke's creative team, however, don't seem to share the same perspective.

In a stunning announcement from Masterpiece, it was revealed that the Duke will no longer be a part of the series.

Miss Scarlet, however, will be free to move on and continue her own adventure. How will that affect the show? And what will Eliza do now, without William? Here's everything we know so far about Miss Scarlet and the Duke season 5.

Will There Be Miss Scarlet and the Duke Season 5?

Even though the 5th season of the show has been officially confirmed by PBS, there's not much to celebrate. The story of Miss Scarlet, struggling with her investigative business and always looking for ways to make ends meet, will continue without the support of the Duke. While the character will most likely adapt and survive, the show's ratings may not.

The news that season 5 will rebrand as Miss Scarlet and reboot Eliza Scarlet's entire life has spread like wildfire on social media. Creator Rachael New's optimistic promise to fill the season with "new crimes, new friends, new enemies and new romance" didn't calm anyone down.

“Well, it’s the end of the road for me. I watched for the chemistry & romance between #MissScarletAndTheDuke. So disappointed that the will-they/won’t they got so stretched out, leaving nothing in the end,” X user VicsTiara said.

Now that William is officially out of the picture, the promise of new romance seems to be pointing at Eliza and Nash. While some viewers actually wanted them to end up as crime-solving partners, the majority never saw them as a couple and don't really want to change their view of the series now.

The sudden heartbreak, and the wave of outrage it caused, is causing many to reconsider even giving season 5 a chance. Miss Scarlet and the Duke is one of those shows that would have been perfectly watchable as a miniseries, ending after season 1, and now that's the only way to get the desired Eliza and William happily ever after.

If you are still interested in what Miss Scarlet season 5 might bring, keep an eye out for more news and behind-the-scenes updates. Filming for the upcoming season has already begun, so stay tuned for casting announcements.
