In this project, Gina Rodriguez's comic talent shines even brighter than in Not Dead Yet.

Not Dead Yet was abruptly canceled after its second season, and we won't see the continuation of the fate of Nell, played by Gina Rodriguez, who can see the ghosts of those she writes obituaries for. It was a life-affirming project with a charming lead that didn't waste time setting up the plot and hit the ground running once the characters were introduced.

But all good things must come to an end, which is sad, because sometimes they end before their time. If two seasons of Not Dead Yet weren't enough for you, then we have the perfect replacement – and the main thing that connects these two projects is Gina Rodriguez in the lead role.

Jane the Virgin Is a Project Where Creators Can Do Anything

Jane the Virgin, an ironic TV melodrama deliberately stylized as a typical Latin American soap opera, is worth watching at least for the incredible sense of control the showrunners have over what happens.

They can always refer to an episode from two years ago to change the direction of the plot and take it where they want, without having to worry about the opinion of the network executives.

What is Jane the Virgin About?

Jane grew up under the influence of a strict Latin American grandmother who taught her granddaughter modesty and abstinence from an early age. Even as an adult, Jane remained chaste and rebuffed all advances from her fiancé.

But an ordinary visit to the gynecologist changed her whole life – Jane became the victim of an accidental artificial insemination. Her world turned upside down, and now she must make a difficult decision, deal with shocked relatives, meet the baby's biological father, and do many other things she could not even think about two weeks ago.

Jane the Virgin is an Inventive Remake of a Venezuelan Soap Opera

Jane is based on the Venezuelan project of the same name. However, it is not a direct remake, but an ironic rethinking that turned a family drama into a life-affirming dramedy.

By combining two television traditions, Jane the Virgin took the best of both. Venezuela gave the show colorful, attractive and stylish characters bound together by a tangle of secrets and passions. America made the acting much more realistic and convincing, and gave the show such hallmarks of modern ironic comedy as an omniscient narrator and hilarious explanatory credits.

So if you've been looking for something like Not Dead Yet to make your evenings a little more cozy and relaxing, what are you waiting for? Turn on Jane the Virgin.
