It’s actually a hidden gem from the 2000s.

Back in the 1980s, Michelle Pfeiffer rose to fame with her roles in crime flicks like Scarface (1983) and Tequila Sunrise (1988). However, you may have totally missed that the 80s star is also very much of a horror performer.

It’s proved by What Lies Beneath, a supernatural horror that was a huge box office success in 2000. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, it both offered a nail-biting roller coaster of a story and displayed that the actress really belonged in the genre.

The Sinister Story Behind What Lies Beneath

The film’s plot revolves around Norman and Claire, a married couple whose life seems to be completely calm and happy. However, the point is that Norman betrayed Claire a year earlier, with her being unaware of the truth.

What Claire isn’t oblivious to are the voices she claims to hear in their lakeside house. Besides, she also starts seeing an image of a young woman that haunts her all the time.

Norman doesn’t believe her, but the more he rejects Claire’s words, the more preoccupied she becomes about the ghosts, eventually believing that they came to ruin their family’s life.

Is This Horror Even Worth-Watching?

You might be thinking that What Lies Beneath is just another haunted house movie, but don’t be misguided: it’s actually more of a Hitchcock-esque horror than a generic scary flick.

“It's got a few really good jump scares, a decent plot, and great performances. The ending is really satisfying. All around solid movie,” claims Redditor @ImpureThoughts59.

Yes, it’s really solid, and the performances of Pfeiffer and her co-star Harrison Ford are stellar here. It’d be really curious for you to see Ford playing a bad guy, as such roles aren’t really typical of his filmography.

Besides, apart from the decent horror and thriller aspects, it’s very much of a relationship drama about deception, infidelity and other secrets that ruin families.

Where Can You Watch This Film?

You should add this overlooked gem to your watchlist right away — luckily, What Lies Beneath is now available for streaming on Prime Video and Disney+ .
