MCU's Epic Plot Twist Was Just a Lucky Accident, Apparently
Marvel's plan? What plan? Russos reveal MCU just winging it. More or less.
There's no denying that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is a mastermind when it comes to crafting the elaborate storylines and interconnections of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU ). Or is he? According to Avengers director Joe Russo, the MCU's success may be due to the fact that there was never really a solid plan in place.
In an interview with Deadline, Russo stated that Feige's genius lies in his willingness to deviate from the original plan and roll with the punches.
"There's an idea, but you can't have a plan if the movie you're making tanks. There's no plan after that. Right? So, it's really about, as the movie succeeded, there was sort of an enthusiasm about well, what else could we do? And then that's when new ideas would come out… a lot of the stuff was made up in between the movies. And some of the best call forwards or callbacks were thought of after the fact."
This approach was exemplified in Captain America: Civil War, where the reveal that Bucky Barnes was responsible for the death of Tony Stark's parents was apparently a lucky "happenstance" rather than a carefully planned plot point.
This shocking twist ended up having major implications for the characters and storylines of the MCU, proving that Feige's seemingly improvisational style may actually be a key factor in the franchise's success (and essentially breaking our hearts in the process.)
So, does this mean that the MCU is just winging it as it goes along? Not necessarily. While the specific details may not always be set in stone, it's clear that Feige and the rest of the Marvel team have a solid overarching vision for the franchise. And with the MCU's track record of delivering consistently thrilling and satisfying films, it's hard to argue with the results.
