Mattel Is Determined To Make A ‘Gritty’ Hot Wheels Movie, But Should They?
Fans believe the company failed to learn the lesson of Barbie's success.
The runaway success of Barbie is a unique phenomenon that no one could have predicted right after the movie was announced.
With its unprecedented competition with Oppenheimer dominating the Internet for quite some time and the movie already surpassing the $1 billion mark in box office grosses, it is safe to say that Barbie has become an integral part of film history.
With such outstanding results, it is no surprise that Mattel, the toy company behind the iconic doll, quickly realized the commercial potential of making movies based on their products.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the company is currently assessing the potential of some of its toys to become big screen hits, with Hot Wheels being one of them.
The project has been in development since 2011, and although the film does not yet have a script, the company is determined to make the Hot Wheels movie, which producer J.J. Abrams described as "grounded and gritty," a reality.
However, fans are not particularly excited about yet another toy being turned into a movie franchise, as they are not sure if the creators will be able to catch lightning in a bottle a second time.
They say the lesson to be learned from Barbie's success is that audiences crave something bizarre and unexpected, not that they suddenly want more movies based on toys.
Fans worry that Barbie inadvertently opened the floodgates to a wave of mediocre toy movies and TV shows, with companies failing to understand what made Barbie so special.
The "gritty" Hot Wheels movie doesn't sound nearly as exciting to fans as Barbie, as there have been (somewhat) grounded and realistic takes on toys, like the Transformers movies, which eventually turned into yet another formulaic franchise.
However, some believe that with the right approach, the movie could be quite decent.
Regardless of your opinion, it will be some time before we see the final result, as the movie is still in the early stages of development and no release date has been announced.
