Marvel's Newest Big Bad is Nothing More Than a Thanos Ripoff
The appearance of Kang in the new Ant-Man trailer has prompted a heated debate among MCU fans, who discuss if Kang is too similar to the previous Big Bad, fan-favorite Thanos.
The new trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has introduced the character of Kang to the big screen. Before that, we met the character played by Jonathan Majors – or rather a version of him – on the small screen only, in Disney+ 's Loki. The trailer shows Ant-Man, Wasp, and their family falling into a secret universe beneath ours where Kang is waiting for them to strike some kind of deal.
Judging by the rings flashed in the trailer, Marvel fans developed a theory that Kang needs the Ten Rings from Shang-Chi and Ms. Marvel's bangles for his Time Chair, a plot that made many viewers cringe.
"Wow, a villain requiring something to be collected before reigning over Earth. How original," one commenter wrote.
"I miss the originality of the villain trying to break the Avengers up and then having to fight a faceless army," the other agreed.
However, there were hopeful fans who thought that such a ripoff from the story of Thanos is not possible since it would be too forced and cheesy.
"I don't think it's that, I just think they are all from the same premise of future tech. I have a feeling they may tie together for the next Avenger movie, but not to power his chair. That seems hokey and corny. Seems Marvel is trying to right the ship, and not that," one comment read.
Another theme for discussion was if Kang could become a Thanos-level thread for the MCU. While some viewers feel that Kang could not be as powerful and intimidating as Thanos, Marvel Comics fans disagree.
"I feel like Kang is just a Loki-level villain for Phase 4. It took 3 phases to get to Endgame Thanos, and each phase is about 3-5 years long. It's too early to say Kang is MCU's next big bad. At the end of Phase 4 or somewhere in Phase 5, is when we will get a clue about who the Thanos-Level villain is pretty much like how Thanos was sort of introduced at the end of Phase 1," one Reddit user explained.
"This Immortus is responsible for the entire MCU as we know it, and his variants are now creating a multiverse. He's the big bad," the other commented.
