Marvel's Cheap Secret Revealed: Company Reuses the Same $5K Bourbon Bottle
In episode 4 of Secret Invasion, Nick Fury brags about his stupid-expensive bourbon, but it’s the same bottle that was used in another Marvel installment before.
Secret Invasion ’s episode 4 is rather eventful and filled with action, but it has its quiet scenes (that are still rather intense, though). In one of them, we see an encounter between Nick Fury and Skrull Rhodey.
Since they left on a bad note previously, Fury decides to make the first step forward and offers his rival a drink of bourbon.
Now, this isn’t just any bourbon: it’s Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon, "$5,000 worth of 24-karat liquid gold" as Fury himself put in. This 23-year-old drink is no simple booze as it's extremely rare and expensive — that’s why Fury is so proud of himself.
The S.H.I.E.L.D. director prompts the Skrull to take a sit and drink with him by saying these "23 years of distilled perfection” would help the two “settle their beef like proper gentlemen," and this convinces fans more than it does Rhodey: understandably, the interest in Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon skyrockets after the episode.
The newly found interest in the rare bourbon actually led to fans discovering Marvel’s little cheap secret. Despite this bourbon being so rare and costly, this very same bottle was used in another project before — you could see it in the bartender’s hands in the second episode of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law!
Unless the Marvel folks reuse the same bottle of extremely expensive bourbon to save the planet, they’re being properly and blatantly cheap here: instead of buying a new one — or going for a different brand, which would’ve made more sense — they are turning this same piece of glass into a proper recurring actor to save the $5K.
To be honest, this could also have to do with how hard it is to acquire even one bottle of Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon: in real life, each one can cost even more grand just because of its rarity.
This is something a bunch of wealthy Marvel fans are about to discover on their own as they hunt for Nick Fury’s favorite bourbon, which only adds to our amusement at this situation.
