Tony Stark had a great run in the MCU and a beautiful and tragic finale to his story. Now, he seems to be back — and Marvel fans are furious with the studio and RDJ.

Summary:

  • Robert Downey Jr. ’s Iron Man was a crucial part of the MCU for many years.
  • After Tony Stark’s death in Endgame, the actor claimed he was done with it.
  • A recent insight suggested that RDJ would reprise his role, and fans weren’t happy.

Robert Downey Jr.’s first outing as Tony Stark in Iron Man virtually jumpstarted the entirety of the MCU as we know it today. For many years, RDJ’s Iron Man has been a crucial part of Avengers; he was the beating heart of the iconic superhero team. But then, in Avengers: Endgame, he died like a hero…but will he stay dead?

What Did Fans and RDJ Himself Say About His Fate?

Ever since Tony Stark’s death in Endgame, fans have been speculating about his potential return. Losing such an essential part of the team was dramatic in terms of the plot, but could have terrible consequences for the franchise both started and largely kept alive by Robert Downey Jr.’s character — at least, fans thought so.

Despite the money and fame RDJ received from playing Iron Man over the years, the actor himself made a point of denying his return to the MCU virtually every time he was asked about it. Sometimes, he said that it was a “never say never” situation, but for the most part, Downey Jr. was content with just one “never” in his answer.

But recently, the famous insider MyTimeToShineHello shared the most surprising news: according to them, Robert Downey Jr. already agreed to return to the MCU.

How Did Fans React to the News of RDJ’s Return?

For the most part, fans didn’t believe MyTimeToShineHello, claiming that the insider was deliberately spreading misinformation. But some decided to trust the scooper, and their reaction varied. Quite a few people were happy…but others turned their backs on both Marvel and RDJ for kicking the dead horse all too violently.

“When he's almost 60 years old? When he's already said he's tired of the role? When hiring him takes almost 1/4 of a film's budget? When he's getting established in more challenging roles like the one he had in Oppenheimer? It's one thing if Marvel wants to hire him, it's another if RDJ wants to come back,” wrote QuestionerNews.

Others made a point of saying that everyone “loves a good check,” implying that if Marvel were to offer enough money, even an actor who has claimed to be tired of his role numerous times would agree. Overall, no one has any illusions about Downey Jr.’s reasons for potential return — but we’ll have to wait and see whether he returns at all, first.
