Mark Wahlberg Fought Martin Scorsese Over This $291.5M Movie: 'I Don't Give a F***!'
You might be thinking, "Who in their right mind wouldn't want to work with Martin Scorsese?" Apparently, the answer to this question is simple — Mark Wahlberg!
Unlike oh so many other actors, Mark Wahlberg was never exactly ecstatic about working with Martin Scorsese.
This in itself is uncommon, but here comes more: in reality, it was Scorsese who was happy to work with Wahlberg, not the other way around!
When Mark's former agent received an invitation from the legendary director, he immediately assumed that Wahlberg would be happy to hop on the train.
He informed Scorsese that Wahlberg is taking the offer, and only then did he share the happy news with the actor… Only to realize that his protege was in fact mad at him.
"I wasn't committed to making the movie and my agent told Marty that I was. Marty called me up and he was so excited about making this movie together. I said, 'I'm not doing the movie,'" shared Mark in his interview with GQ.
After some quality yelling at each other, Mark and his agent agreed that the actor will read the script once more and meet with Scorsese in person to discuss it.
The meeting was tough, too: as the acclaimed director was trying to convince Wahlberg to sign onto the project, the latter was trying to dodge the movie altogether at first, and then, pushing his own approach to the role.
This worked: Scorsese gave him carte blanche to do any improv on the set and shape the character himself.
However, their eventual agreement was not the beginning of the golden era. While shooting the movie, Wahlberg and Scorsese were fighting all the time, and it was very hard for the two to work together as conflicts kept emerging.
As Wahlberg put it, their work was a constant struggle and they had too many problems with each other. One of the incidents the actor recalls happened because of his… Hair.
Mark Wahlberg was supposed to have a short cut in The Departed and long hair in Invincible. The thing is, the filming of Scorsese's The Departed with Scorsese dragged out too long, and Mark refused to cut his hair for it as he was already starting work on Invincible soon.
"I wouldn't cut my hair and Marty was pissed off. He was like, 'You've got to cut your f**king hair,' and I was, 'I don't give a f**k,'" said the actor.
If they fought so much over a haircut, it's hard to imagine just how many other conflicts were happening on the set. But despite that — and despite his initial hate toward the movie — Wahlberg actually wanted to make a sequel.
This idea never came to life, though… Maybe, Martin Scorsese was too done with him, too?
