Mandalorian Co-creator Weighs In on Baby Yoda's Jedi Ambitions
Can Baby Yoda handle the Force?
The Mandalorian Season 3 has finally arrived on our screens, which means that we will be treated to not only Din Djarin's journey to redemption in the mines of Mandalore, but also Grogu's growth (rather figuratively speaking), strengthening his relationship with his adoptive father, and becoming either a Jedi, a Mandalorian, or both.
Dave Filoni, Executive Creative Director at Lucasfilm and co-creator of Mandalorian, answered questions from Entertainment Tonight and speculated on the Grogu's future.
Once again, Lucasfilm's current mastermind, who has personally worked with George Lucas and is considered his "disciple," demonstrated his deep knowledge of Star Wars philosophy as well as his ability to avoid tricky questions that imply spoilers.
First and foremost, Filoni shared his thoughts on how Grogu's decision to leave Jedi training with Luke Skywalker would affect his mastery and coexistence with the Force.
"If Grogu maintains his discipline and focuses on his trainings, he can still develop his abilities. But it's the focus of training, the dedication that makes all the difference", Filoni says.
He called Grogu lucky, since a little member of the Yoda species already has a teacher, Luke. Filoni also mentioned that Luke retained the fundamentals of the teachings even after Obi-Wan's death, allowing him to master the Force.
And yet, mentioning Qui-Gon Jinn's appeal to young Anakin, he noted that this is far from easy. So Grogu has yet to decide if he needs to become a Jedi at all.
After all, we know that Luke himself left his master, Yoda, when he sensed the danger to his friends. Perhaps it is the realization of his own attachment to Din Djarin that will help the little guy find his way to the Jedi path.
Filoni also answered the question about the age at which Yoda's species begins to speak.
According to him, this happens at a fairly young age, but we already know that Ahsoka ( in Chapter 13) was able to communicate with Grogu by feeling his emotions triggered by his thoughts.
At the same time, the creator of "Filoniverse" claims not to know whether Grogu will speak in riddles, like Yoda, or mimic the Mandalorian's manner of speech.
So, it doesn't look like that's going to happen anytime soon. At least not in this season.
The first episode of The Mandalorian Season 3 aired on March 1. Next episode of the show will be released on March 8.
