It’s eerily similar, yet very different from anything you may expect.

Summary:

  • Jonathan Bailey got his break playing the eldest son, Anthony Bridgerton, in Netflix 's hit series Bridgerton.
  • But that wasn't his Netflix debut. Back in 2016, Bailey starred in Phoebe Waller-Bridge's TV show Crashing.
  • Crashing's Sam and Bridgerton's Anthony come from very different backgrounds, but they share some strange similarities.

Not many actors enjoy being typecast, and many consider it one of their greatest fears. However, typecasting is a difficult spell to break. Once you find that you're really good at capturing a look or an image of a character, chances are you'll be asked to do it again and again.

But is this really typecasting, or just a stroke of luck when you have to portray two characters from completely different backgrounds, and even in completely different time periods, but with a few too many similarities to go unnoticed? Well, there is no better actor to talk to about this than Jonathan Bailey.

After all, his equally iconic characters in Crashing (2016) and Netflix's Bridgerton are very similar to each other, despite being completely different on the surface.

Jonathan Bailey's First Netflix Role

Pre-Fleabag Phoebe Waller-Bridge's TV show Crashing focuses on a group of people who occupy an abandoned hospital and rent it out as property guardians. In a classic sitcom setup, eight very different people come together and explore the nature of their twisted relationships.

Sam, played by Jonathan Bailey, is one of them. Just like Anthony Bridgerton from season 1 and the beginning of season 2 of Bridgerton, Sam is known for his chaotic sex life, as he doesn't miss a chance to get another girl into his bed. As it turns out, Sam, like Anthony, is suffering from the loss of his father.

Although there is a clear difference in how the loss of their respective fathers has affected both Anthony and Sam, the similarity is too good to be missed. Also, both deaths ended up messing with the characters' romantic interests.

While Anthony Bridgerton ends up in a very steamy enemies-to-lovers type of story with Miss Kate Sharma, who later becomes Miss Bridgerton, Sam tries to explore everything life has to offer. However, he finds himself drawn to his best friend Fred, and let us just say that the amount of pining is equally painful in both series.

Of course, Crashing doesn't fit the Bridgerton vibe at all. It's modern, it's dirty, it's flashy, it's provocative in the best possible way. However, the show is great for anyone with a few free evenings to fill. And as far as we know, Bridgerton fans are the ones in desperate need of entertainment while waiting for season 3.

If you want to enjoy Jonathan Bailey's acting, accompanied by Julie Dray, Louise Ford, Damien Molony, Adrian Scarborough, Amit Shah, and the brilliant writing of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, you can stream Crashing on Netflix.
