Despite the initial backlash, the film seems to be doing quite well at the box office.

With every announcement of a live-action remake of a Disney classic, fans complain that they are completely unnecessary and that the creators should focus on something new and original instead of milking fan nostalgia.

But even if they are right, one recent premiere showed that his formula works like a charm, and the flow of remakes is far from over.

The Little Mermaid is opening with great success at the box office and is on track to earn around $118 million over the Memorial Day weekend, with $95.5 million earned over the first three days, making it the fifth highest grossing Memorial Day weekend opening of all time.

The review situation is a bit unclear, as the critical reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic are about the same, giving it 67% and 59/100 respectively, while the audience scores are drastically different, at 95% and 2.3/100 respectively.

Other reviewers stand in the middle, calling it pretty decent and "not that bad," even if The Little Mermaid is not a masterpiece for the ages.

Anyway, the situation doesn't seem to really affect the movie's grosses, although it might change in the long run.

Fans are divided on this news, some joining those who liked the movie and others continuing to lament Disney's new financial "victory" or saying that they simply don't care about the movie.

But one thing remains clear, the company's strategy is clearly working despite the backlash, as each new "soulless remake" continues to make solid sums of money.

Whether it is due to the negative publicity, with people going to the theaters just to see if the movie is really as bad as they expected, or simply because such movies are a perfect choice for parents to take their kids, or both, fans better get ready for even more live-action remakes to be announced in the future.
