Little Mermaid Live-Action Repeats Lion King's Biggest Mistake
It's hard not to notice the surge in live-action cartoon remakes in the past few years: they have been a thing for a long time, but now they're a trend.
The reasons behind that are fairly simple: first of all, they've become much easier to produce with all the modern technology, and second of all, they already have an audience of all the people who love the original cartoon.
In the last five years alone, we have seen live-action remakes of Pinocchio, Lady and the Tramp, The Lion King, Aladdin, and many others. And many of them make the same eye-rolling mistake over and over again — including the upcoming The Little Mermaid.
When cartoon animals in live-action movies look too much like their real-life counterparts, a lot of people get upset. Sometimes they appear too freaky, and sometimes they just lose all the charm and character — so no wonder that after it was revealed that Sebastian from The Little Mermaid now looks like an actual crab, many fans were either triggered or disappointed.
Most comments look something like this:
"This is Lion King 2019 all over again. Stop remaking animated classics without the animation. Get new ideas for live-action movies, if you're going to revisit animated ones keep their expression," Twitter user Fawfulthgreat64 said.
Many fans agree that the studios are just cutting corners and trying to save on proper animations, while others see the issue in their "life-like" obsession:
"Look, I understand it's a crab. But may I remind people that this is literally a movie with a walking mermaid and a sea witch octopus. Not everything is supposed to look and feel realistic," Twitter user GuyWhoConquers noted.
However, not everyone is so critical of Sebastian's new appearance or the general idea of live-action remakes. Some enjoy this style, claim that the studio "made it work", and make fun of those unsatisfied "that a crab looks like a crab":
"I really don't understand all these comments complaining about people complaining Sebastian the crab looks like a real-life crab. I mean, imagine if these guys were there years ago, accepting these Garfield and Scooby Doo when could we have had the Garfield and Scooby doo we had," Twitter user VG2273 said.
The Little Mermaid is expected to hit the theaters on May, 23 — and then we'll see if the live-action idea works out.
