Law & Order’s Newcomer Teases ‘A Lot of Tension’ With Hugh Dancy

While many Law & Order fans were initially excited to see their favorite show back on the small screen, the end result of the revival has failed to impress the majority. Viewers are unhappy that the show now tackles too many social justice cases, and does so with little to no relation to how the real U.S. justice system works.

However, in the hope that the criticism will sooner or later have a much-needed effect on the show's creators, viewers continue to tune in for new episodes, keeping the legacy of one of television's most iconic procedurals alive.

The departure of one of Law & Order's veterans, Sam Waterston's Jack McCoy, is one of the reasons many people are reconsidering whether to watch the show at all. However, it wouldn't be fair not to give his replacement, Tony Goldwyn's Nicholas Baxter, a fair chance to prove himself. Especially when McCoy's ideas will live on through E.A.D.A. Nolan Price.

Tony Goldwyn’s First Law & Order Episode

Tony Goldwyn has already made his first appearance as Nicholas Baxter in the 7th episode of season 23 of Law & Order titled Balance of Power. The viewers were able to quickly realize how different the new D.A. is from Jack McCoy and how hands-off he is when it comes to the cases he's working on. This won't come as a surprise only to the viewers.

Any change isn't easy to get used to, and Hugh Dancy's Nolan Price will need some time to adjust to the new way of working that Baxter brings. He didn't know how right he was when he noted that McCoy's departure was the “end of an era.”

Now, however, he'll have to embrace the change and get on board, or he'll find himself endlessly at odds with the new prosecutor.

According to Goldwyn, this tension between his character and Nolan Price is definitely something to look forward to. He mentioned the relationship between the two in an interview with Today:

“As these initial episodes evolve, you're really going to see Nolan Price, Hugh Dancy's character, and I kind of sniffing each other out. They're trying to figure out where we come from, so there's quite a lot of tension in addition to some really interesting cases that I was really happy to see,” the actor teased.

Without the interpersonal tension, Law & Order would probably lose a good half of its appeal, so fans of the show who are still unsure what to make of Nicholas Baxter's persona are happy to see him interact more with the people on his team. Even if those people aren't too trusting of his methods.
