Latest Virgin River Season 6 Update Hints We Shouldn't Expect It Before 2025

Despite the fact that the wait for Virgin River season 6 may eventually be more excruciating than we might have wanted, the big picture is pretty optimistic. First of all, two Christmas specials arriving this November will do just fine to satisfy our Virgin River crave for a while. Secondly, the series' showrunner Patrick Sean Smith has a promising update on the writing for season 6.
In a recent interview with Glamour, Smith has indicated that now that the writers' strike is officially over, Virgin River has half of its sixth season already written, and now they "just have to get back for the second half."
Besides, it's not like Virgin River fans will have to just sit back and enjoy the holiday spirit in those Christmas specials. Oh no, another emotional rollercoaster is coming!
"You won't get a wedding, but you may or may not get a birth or two. The two episodes [...] touch on all the characters' lives. It's feel good, but there are also plenty of twists and turns to get you excited about season six," Smith told Glamour.
When to Expect Virgin River Season 6?
However, even though half of the work is done, it still means we have a long wait ahead of us. When Virgin River received initial order on Netflix back in September 2018, it took the writers three months to get everything done before the shooting started in December.
If season 6 follows suit, then it means the writers will need at least a month and a half, given that a part of the sixth season appears to be ready. However, in order to start filming, Virgin River needs SAG-AFTRA strike to also resolve. If it happens next month, then production could start in December 2023 — in the most optimistic scenario.
But it's more likely it will only start in 2024. Season 5 took five months to film; that means the shooting might wrap at some point in the second half of 2024.
In the case of season 4, it was released on Netflix 10 months after the filming wrapped. Even though this time the platform might speed the process up, it would still mean that season 6 is unlikely to invite us back to Virgin River until 2025.
The show's screenwriter Richard Keith took to Instagram to once again advocate for a "fair deal" to end the strikes, mentioning that "if they don't hurry up, there won't be any Virgin River on Netflix until 2025." The showrunner, in his turn, did not provide any new details on the potential release date for Virgin River season 6.
