Even with a show like this, there is always the question of why.

Game of Thrones was no stranger to brutally killing off its characters, no matter how beloved they were by the fans. There was even a joke among fans that it was pointless to pick favorites on the show because they might end up dead in the next episode.

Indeed, that was the case for many fans when Jason Momoa's Khal Drogo was killed off in season one. His wife, Daenerys Targaryen, brilliantly portrayed by Emilia Clarke, was left alone in a strange land to mourn her loved one.

But the question of exactly why his life ended still bothers fans, and there's a reason for that. Well, his death is really complicated because the only thing we know for sure is how his life was taken. Fans may recall that Daenerys had no choice but to strangle Drogo, who was already practically dead from the disease.

But how was Drogo brought to this state? Well, after he was wounded in battle and returned home, Daenerys turned to a witch, Mirri Maz Durr, and asked her to help her husband.

There's a scene left off-screen that suggests Durr used some magic to heal Drogo, but instead, after the scene, we learn that while Durr and Drogo were in the tent, Daenerys went into labor, but unfortunately lost her child.

She was unconscious for some time, only to wake up to find no baby and a comatose husband. It goes without saying that this was all done by a certain witch, but there's still no proof or exact motive. That's why fans are still wondering.

“Was she trying to teach Daenerys a cruel lesson, which is that life doesn't matter when your loved ones are dead and your property destroyed? Or was Durr just trying to prevent Khal Drogo from conquering more people? And did Mirri Maz Durr purposely make him worse the moment she touched him after his last fight?” Redditor ApplicationFrosty439 said.

Drogo's death is a pivotal moment in the show's narrative. After his funeral, Daenerys burns Mirri Maz Durr and later walks into the same flames holding her three dragon eggs... In that exact moment the Mother of Dragons is born.
