From the beginning, the actor was concerned about the project's format change, forcing him to make a decision that would determine Yellowstone's fate.

The Yellowstone TV series caused a huge splash when its debut season was released in 2018, sparking a new wave of interest in the Western genre, boosting Montana's tourism industry, and creating an entirely new franchise with several prequels and spinoffs.

Unfortunately, a feud between the show's star, Kevin Costner, and its creator, Taylor Sheridan, led to the premature end of the main series that started it all, as the final six episodes of season 5 will be the show's last.

However, Costner could have buried the series before it even started, as a sudden change in format before the release of season 1 forced the actor to make a tough decision that determined the fate of the project.

During his appearance on Good Morning America, Costner revealed that the project was originally conceived as a full-length feature film, which was one of the reasons he got involved in the first place.

The Fateful Change

Later in production, the original vision for Yellowstone was changed to become a multi-season television show, which put the actor in a tough spot because without him, the whole deal would have fallen apart.

While Costner didn't like the sudden change, he understood the responsibility that was being placed on his shoulders, so he eventually decided to agree to star in multiple seasons of the show.

In light of recent events, his initial discontent with Yellowstone becoming a long-running TV series played a crucial role in the show's demise.

According to some reports, which have been denied by the actor's representatives, Costner only wanted to spend a very limited amount of time on the show's fifth season because it conflicted with his filming schedule.

Now it has become clear that this was just a foreshadowing of things to come, because if Yellowstone had remained a one-off project, none of these problems would have arisen.

No specific release date has been announced for the second part of season 5.
