Katherine Heigl Spills the Tea on Grey's Anatomy's Juiciest Scandal: 'I Just Wasn't Proud'
It's time to admit that the actress didn't deserve all the criticism that came her way.
Katherine Heigl became really popular after her performance in Grey's Anatomy. Thanks to the role of Izzie Stevens, the actress got the opportunity to realize her full acting potential, and at first, her affairs went brilliantly.
The Ugly Truth, Knocked Up, Killers, 27 Dresses – this is not a complete list of films of one of the once brightest actresses of Hollywood.
But in the sixth season of Grey's Anatomy, Heigl unexpectedly announced her departure from the project. The actress cited her desire to spend more time with her husband and adopted daughter, and also mentioned the difficult working conditions, which, as we know now, were actually exhausting.
Heigl Reveals She Never Turned Down an Emmy Nomination
But the main scandal surrounding Heigl and Grey's Anatomy was, of course, the fact that the actress reportedly turned down an Emmy nomination for her role as Izzie in the fourth season of the medical drama.
However, in a recent Let's Be Clear podcast with Shannen Doherty, Katherine admitted that she did not turn down the nomination and her words spoken more than a decade ago were misinterpreted:
“Well, I didn't [turn down an Emmy nomination] and everybody keeps saying that. [...] You have to submit your work and then they deliberate and then they decide if they want to give you a nomination. I just didn't submit my work that year. [...] I just wasn't proud of my work.”
The actress also admitted that she shouldn't have said anything at all about the Emmy nomination because it caused a storm of controversy and criticism, even though her decision was motivated by a desire to be honorable.
More Than a Decade Later, Katherine Gets the Fan Support She Deserves
However, times change and although Katherine received a wave of criticism for her initial comment, most fans now support the actress and admit that Heigl made absolutely the right decision.
“To be fair they really didn’t give her much to work with in season 4. She very much played a supporting role in George and Alex’s stories that season,” Reddit user BornIntoTheWrongEra pointed out.
Izzie's arc has always been controversial, and many viewers even consider it the worst of the entire series, which is quite an "achievement" considering how many seasons Grey's Anatomy has lasted.
In any case, poor character development was not the fault of the actress, but of the writers, and Katherine Heigl does not deserve hate for her thoughtful and fair decision not to be nominated for one of television's most prestigious awards with material that clearly did not deserve it.
