Kate Winslet Settles Biggest Movie Controversy of All Time... With an F-Bomb
So, could Jack have survived after the Titanic went down?
Even 25 years after Titanic 's premiere, the scene where Jack Dawson says goodbye to Rose DeWitt Bukater and disappears in icy-cold water remains one of the most heart-wrenching and controversial moments in cinema history.
It has led to never-ending fan discussions about whether Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet could have both fit on the door, thus saving Jack's life. Recently, Winslet herself settled the controversy with a profanity-laced response.
The actress talked to Josh Horowitz in an episode of his podcast dedicated to Cameron's new big movie, Avatar: The Way of Water.
Of course, speaking of Cameron and water, Horowitz couldn't help but raise the question that everyone who has been part of Titanic just hates getting asked. Could Jack have fit on that door? Before actually asking Winslet that, he showed her part of his interview with Leonardo DiCaprio where the actor completely shut down after the question, jokingly saying, "I have no comment" and adding nothing more.
Contrary to her ex-co-star, Kate decided to resolve the door issue once and for all.
"I don't f**king know," the actress admitted to the amusement of the host.
However, after a moment's hesitation, Winslet actually gave her honest opinion on the door controversy. The actress explained that being a paddleboarder, a windsurfer, a scuba diver, and overall a good swimmer, she had a pretty good understanding of how water worked. And two adults placed on one stand-up paddleboard, for example, would make it extremely unstable and most probably would fall into the water.
The actress is sure the same would have happened with Jack and Rose if they had both climbed on that door. Besides, the door was broken, which made the whole construction even more unstable and the idea even less sustainable. This reasoning led Winslet to the conclusion that she had apparently never voiced before:
"You've heard it here, for the first time, yes he could have fit, he could have fit on that door, but it would not have stayed afloat. It wouldn't."
Looks like one of the young lovers did have to die to let the other live.
Finally addressing the biggest movie controversy of all time, Winslet jokingly called out her critics for finding the most absurd and vile reason for Jack's death: "And also, apparently, I was too fat," she said, glaring into the camera.
