Bill Burr managed to deliver an incredibly convincing portrayal of an ex-stormtrooper in just one scene in season 2.

Summary:

  • John Boyega's ex-stormtrooper Finn had incredible potential to become an extremely complex character
  • Unfortunately, he was sidelined due to constant story changes between sequels
  • The Mandalorian TV series took the same idea for the character of Migs Mayfeld, but improved it dramatically

By the time the third season of The Mandalorian arrived, the show had definitely fallen off a bit, as it received a much more mixed reception than its predecessors and is considered by many Star Wars fans to be the weakest of the series so far.

However, that doesn't take away from the fact that the first two seasons of the series gave us a whole bunch of unforgettable moments, one of which, though quite short, managed to put the entire sequel trilogy to shame.

The Idea For Finn's Character Looked Very Promising

When the very first teaser for Episode VII - The Force Awakens finally dropped back in 2014, the first character fans saw after so many years was a mysterious man in stormtrooper armor, portrayed by John Boyega.

Finn, as we later learned, was a First Order deserter who turned against his former superiors and played a major role in the events of the film, joining Rey and Poe Dameron in their fight against the forces of the dark side.

While Episode VII didn't explain much of Finn's past at the time, fans expected his character arc to be further developed in the following films, but unfortunately the opposite happened.

Much to the disappointment of viewers and even the actor himself, Finn was sidelined and reduced to a virtually useless supporting character, ending any hope of further growth and burying his enormous potential.

The Mandalorian Took The Same Concept and Improved It Dramatically

The creators of The Mandalorian TV series used the same ex-stormtrooper idea with the character of Migs Mayfeld, but to everyone's surprise, they did a much better job with it while giving him much less screen time.

Brilliantly portrayed by Bill Burr, who once again proved that he is capable of much more than just comedic performances, Migs first appeared in the show's debut season, though nothing of his troubled past was revealed at the time.

Burr was given a chance to really shine when his character returned in season 2, going undercover with Din Djarin to retrieve vital information from an Imperial facility.

During this mission, his past was revealed when he inadvertently came face-to-face with his old commanding officer.

We learned that Migs' entire division was killed during the Operation: Cinder, Emperor Palpatine's final order in the event of his death, which resulted in the destruction of several worlds, including Imperial ones, as punishment.

Unable to stand the officer's gloating over this horrible event, Migs shot him dead, jeopardizing the entire operation.

What made this scene so special was the brilliant writing that allowed the character's entire past and pain to be conveyed in a single conversation, and combined with Burr's outstanding acting, it resulted in one of the most powerful moments in the series, if not all of Star Wars.

Of course, it's in no way John Boyega's fault that his character was poorly written, but this single scene from a much smaller Star Wars project only highlights one of the biggest problems with the entire sequel trilogy.

As for Migs, hopefully we will see him again in one of the future seasons of The Mandalorian or some other installment of the franchise, even if it is just a cameo.
