Jonathan Bailey's Dream Comedy Involves 300 Gay Ancient Greek Soldiers
And we totally get it.
Summary:
- Jonathan Bailey is a British actor currently starring as Anthony Bridgerton in Bridgerton, Tim Laughlin in Fellow Travelers, and Fiyero in Wicked.
- Despite a wide range of roles, the actor is still looking for more inspiration.
- His dream comedy would be based on the Sacred Band of Thebes.
Every actor has their dream role, and if it's not a specific character they've wanted to portray since they started acting, it's an image of a character. Whether it is a superhero, a sensitive soul with a tragic end, or a romantic lead falling head over heels for his partner, anything is possible in the world of film.
Especially when the actor in question is as hot a topic in the entertainment industry as Jonathan Bailey is right now. As he takes on one project after another in a variety of roles, the actor moves quickly and tries to be everywhere at once.
From the Regency English viscount in Bridgerton to the closeted '50s gay Tim Laughlin in Fellow Travelers to Fiyero in Wicked, Bailey proves that no matter who you are and no matter how big your dreams, anything is possible with hard work and talent. Luckily, he has both.
And, as it turns out, the imagination to create the next hit comedy. The project, which would definitely get a lot of attention if it came to fruition, was first mentioned in Jonathan Bailey and Matt Bomer's joint interview with GQ.
Sacred Band of Thebes Movie Pitch
Speaking of their dream roles, both actors were very open about their desire to stick with more queer roles.
While Bomer, whose career was boosted by his role in White Collar, is now dedicated to the idea of portraying a queer character from every decade of the 20th century (which is not too hard a task, considering Fellow Travelers already covers 4 of them), Bailey's dream goes way beyond that. He's looking to ancient Greece for inspiration.
“I’m obsessed with the Sacred Band of Thebes, an army of 300 gay lovers in [ancient] Greece. They partnered in pairs, this gay army, and they overthrew a Spartan army… I want to do that as a comedy. <...> Just get all the queer actors together,” he suggested.
One can only admire the actor's love for history and romance, as the origin story of the Sacred Band of Thebes could also be a great premise for a romantic period drama. The idea behind such a troupe came from the hypothesis that lovers would fight for each other with more fury and devotion than strangers.
Comedic or not, a story like this deserves to be taught and remembered, so if there was ever a chance for it to reach the big screen, it would surely find many supporters.
For now, you can enjoy both Jonathan Bailey and Matt Bomer in action in Fellow Travelers, airing on Showtime.
