Jennifer Aniston Revealed Who Stopped the Friends Movie from Happening
Over time, quite a number of popular TV shows made a leap to the big screen, including Baywatch and Sex and the City.
And the massive fandom of the immensely popular sitcom Friends had long hoped that their favorite show would get the similar treatment.
However no Friends movie had ever materialized. And a few years ago Jennifer Aniston, who played Rachel Green on Friends, firmly crushed all remaining hopes of a movie continuation.
In an interview with Variety, she said that although there certainly was some interest in a movie, the producers are firmly opposed to the idea:
"Because our producers wouldn't want it, wouldn't let us. Look, it's not been without our desire to, because our fans have wanted it so much."
Upon being asked about whether her co-stars would be willing to reprise their roles, Aniston answered:
"It depends. I mean, we haven't all sat in a room. But would we have loved to have done something together? Yeah. It would have been fun. We could have redesigned it for a couple episodes."
It should be noted that Aniston is 54 now, and her former castmates similarly have aged since the ending of Friends. This alone makes any sort of revival, on the big screen or otherwise, less likely with each passing year.
As for the reason of such attitude on the producers' side, it is clearly rooted in simple caution.
Marta Kauffman, a co-creator of Friends, has said in an interview with the Rolling Stone magazine back in 2013 that a reboot ran the risk of ruining the show's legacy:
"All we'd be doing is putting those six actors back together, but the heart of the show would be gone. Two, I don't know what good it does us. The show is doing just fine, people love it. (A reunion) could only disappoint."
Well, this is an understandable, if somewhat boring and disappointing, position. Quite a few franchises in our time have been marred by subpar continuations, so Kauffman might be wise in trying to avoid the same fate for Friends.
