Should we blame him though?

Jamie Dutton is probably the most complicated character of Yellowstone. Even the fans have changed their minds about him multiple times. In season 1 he was a beloved character who was there for his family and almost the only one ready to fix any problem that came up.

But as the show went on, fans started to realize that Jamie is a confused and troubled man whose actions are mostly a reflection of his... daddy issues. Wes Bentley's character is seen as this typical rich white guy who complicates everything in his life because he never wants to let go of his relationship with his father.

From the very first chapter of the show, we got the feeling that Jamie is always fighting to get his father's attention, and frankly – he rarely succeeds. And there are several reasons for that, the main ones being that his (foster) father, Kevin Costner 's John Dutton, never really wanted to share a lot of family secrets with him, and that Jamie's siblings weren't much help either.

While trying to get John’s attention, Jamie slowly ruined himself, with the pivotal moment in his character development being season 3, when he found out that he was actually adopted by Duttons. After learning that significant detail about his life, he totally changed his approach, although still being hung up on his ties with John Dutton.

The on-again, off-again relationship with his father turned Jamie into this confused and somewhat paranoid person who eventually realized he had nothing left by the show's final chapter.

In the season 4 finale, he killed his biological father, which may have just set him up for more disaster, as if he wasn't already doomed. And now that he is one of John Dutton's (a.k.a. the father's) strongest rivals, he has just plunged his character deeper into the pond of sad boys.
