James Cameron Drops F-Bomb in Defense of Avatar 2

In his latest interview with Empire ahead of the much-anticipated premiere, the filmmaker lashed out at critics of the first movie, who say it's a nothingburger.

"The trolls will have it that nobody gives a s**t and they can't remember the characters' names or one damn thing that happened in the movie," he says. "Then they see the movie again and go, 'Oh, okay, excuse me, let me just shut the f**k up right now.' So I'm not worried about that."

Just to remind you – the original 2009 film became the highest-grossing one of all time earning $2.84 billion and was a technological breakthrough. One can certainly say that the movie did leave a mark on the industry. Jon Landau, the movie's producer has recently explained on FabTV why people across the world love it so much.

"People identify themselves with the Na'Vi. Whether I was in the Middle East, whether I was in South America, people would come and say the Na'Vi, they are me. I see myself in them."

Will the sequel be received the same way? The new film is longer than the original – its runtime is slightly over 3 hours – but Cameron has responded to criticism about its length too.

"I don't want anybody whining about length when they sit and binge watch [television] for eight hours," says Cameron adding that he is prepared for all sorts of reviews starting with "The agonisingly long three-hour movie… I've watched my kids sit and do five one-hour episodes in a row," he said.

The director is sure that there's a need for a big social paradigm shift.

While the fans are kept waiting for the December release, there's one man who has already watched the Avatar sequel. Spanish director Guillermo del Toro has said Cameron's latest installment of the Avatar franchise is a "staggering achievement."

He retweeted a post by Jon Landau saying that the movie "is chokefull of majestic Vistas and emotions at an epic, epic scale. A master at the peak of his powers."

The fans are split. The Cameron camp is looking forward to the sequel's release and understands why the filmmaker is so angry. The fans say he spent a lot of money on the movie people wish to know nothing about. At the same time, it might sting a little that Cameron made the highest-grossing movie in history but still hears a lot of people say that it wasn't great when he is clearly proud of it.

But some users on Reddit wish the new film to end up being a flop, if only to make Cameron a more humble person. It is not Avatar: The Way of Water that causes angry comments and criticism, it is the personality of the filmmaker that does. And a failure is, according to the anti-Cameron camp, is the only remedy.

The 2009 Avatar was meant to usher in a new era of 3D movies but it hasn't happened because Avatar was the only movie that truly qualified. Maybe a new attempt to change the game will be more successful.
