Jackman and Reynolds' Upcoming Reunion Was Almost Ruined by Big Marvel Boss
Deadpool & Wolverine wouldn’t have happened if Kevin Feige got his way.
The story of Ryan Reynolds borderline stalking and nagging Hugh Jackman into making a movie together years after the latter had left Marvel is widely known. Now, we have Deadpool & Wolverine coming right up to close the Merc with a Mouth’s iconic trilogy — but apparently, Kevin Feige almost ruined this movie in advance.
The Big Marvel Boss was insisting on Jackman not reprising his role, but why?
Jackman Actually Wanted to Work with Reynolds
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s favorite story of the former spending ages to make the latter co-star with him in Deadpool & Wolverine has gone viral time and time again, but it’s not exactly accurate. While sure, it took quite some convincing from Reynolds to get Jackman on board, the Wolverine star had wanted to make a movie with him for years. At one point, he just broke under his co-star’s pressure.
“I was just driving, and literally, just like a bolt of lightning, came this knowing deep in my gut that I wanted to do this film with Ryan. For Deadpool and Wolverine to come back together. <...> I knew the fans wanted it ever since I put on the claws, people talked about these two. <...> As soon as I arrived, I rang Ryan, and I just said, ‘Let’s do it,’” Jackman shared with Fandango.
According to the Wolverine star, he didn’t even bother calling his agent before agreeing, so he had to explain himself later. But this collaboration wouldn’t have happened if Jackman listened to Marvel boss Kevin Feige, and here’s why.
Feige Didn’t Want Jackman Returning to Marvel
The Big Marvel Boss was entirely against Hugh Jackman ever reprising his iconic role after 2017’s Logan; in fact, he openly advised the Wolverine star to not return to Marvel. But that wasn’t because of some malicious intent or personal disregard for the longest-running Marvel actor — he just wanted to maintain his perfect story.
“I said, ‘Let me give you a piece of advice, Hugh. Don’t come back. You had the greatest ending in history with Logan. That’s not something we should undo,’” Kevin Feige explained to Empire.
Since technically, the Wolverine from Deadpool & Wolverine won’t be the same guy we’ve grown to know and love over the years, Logan’s story won’t be tarnished by Reynolds and Jackman’s upcoming collaboration. Which is great news, really, and everyone gets what they want — both a fun new movie and a perfect finished story.
