Jack Ryan's Surprising Connection to Game of Thrones Only True Fans Notice
What might Jack Ryan have in common with Game of Thrones, you might ask? Well, one of its actors of course.
And even though that actor's performance is one of the most notable in Season 3 of Jack Ryan, his characters are sufficiently different that those who don't read the credits carefully are unlikely to notice that they played by the same person.
Specifically, James Cosmo, who plays Luka Goncharov, also plays Jeor Mormont, the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, in Game of Thrones.
They are difficult to recognize as played by the same person, because Goncharov is shaved clean, while Mormont has a moustache and a fairly large beard.
And while both of those are supporting roles, Cosmo was greatly praised for both. In Jack Ryan, some of the fans consider him the best part of Season 3, and believe that he deserves the best supporting actor award. And as for Game of Thrones, James Cosmo is usually at the top or near the top of any "Best casting decisions for supporting/short-lived characters" list.
All in all, James Cosmo's ability to play such wildly different – different in both appearance and character – roles, testifies to his talents and experience as an actor.
While Cosmo played his very first role 58 year go, and since then appeared in a good number of famous movies (including Highlander, Braveheart, Trainspotting, Troy, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Ben-Hur and Wonder Woman), as well as in great many TV series, he generally played small roles, supporting characters at best, episodic characters who appear only in a handful of scenes more often.
You would be hard-pressed to remember whom exactly he played in any of the movies above, for example. While his acting skills are consistently lauded whomever he plays in recent years, Jeor Mormont is, perhaps sadly, one of his best-known roles, maybe his best-known role, despite Jeor being a secondary character in one plotline of many, who perishes in the first half of the series. Now we can hope that the role of Luka Goncharov is indeed going to bring Cosmo an award, to top off his long career.
