It’s Safe To Say Harrison Ford Wasn’t A Fan Of His Indiana Jones Costume

With the recent release of the latest Indiana Jones movie, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the Internet quickly filled up with many reviews, interviews, and discussions among fans, critics, and members of the production team.

Though the movie may not have been as well received in theaters and may not have made as much money at the box office as the previous installments, it was generally received with nostalgic joy and gratitude, especially for Harrison Ford.

Fans were especially happy to see the hero they grew up with back on the big screen. His equipment may have changed a bit, and he may have been a much older version of himself, but people were able to recognize the never-changing adventurous spirit of an archaeologist, and that's all that matters.

Besides, the change in appearance may have been for the better. It turns out that Harrison Ford himself wasn't at all impressed when he first saw his costume. Back in 1981, when Raiders of the Lost Ark was released, Indiana Jones' appearance included a leather jacket, a bullwhip, and, in a personal touch from Ford himself, a fedora hat.

And it's not a fedora the actor was particularly happy about.

“It was presented to me as an aspect of character in the first film. My questions about it were many. Why am I wearing a leather jacket in the jungle? Isn’t it hot here? Why am I carrying a whip? What am I going to do with a f**king whip? I’m going to whip people?” the actor shared in a video for GQ Magazine.

The costume department had to explain that the clothes the characters wore were chosen to reflect past adventure films.

In addition, the whip proved to be very useful in all the films when Jones had to defend himself. And it even made a glorious comeback years later, including in The Bestimmung.
