A long path from just a tear-jerker to a fan favorite that was absolutely worth it.

With new Grey's Anatomy characters coming and going, there can be hits and misses for fans. It's hard to sympathize with a character you don't really know, especially when there's always some kind of drama going on between the ones you already love and care about.

However, most of them find their way into the hearts of the audience, even if it takes years to develop a strong connection.

Jo Wilson, who joined Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital as a surgical intern in season 9, failed to gain many fans from the beginning.

Although her backstory was quite interesting and different from anything viewers had seen on Grey's Anatomy before, many found it to be a cheap tear-jerker rather than a well-thought-out storyline.

In addition to criticizing the character, the fanbase also had a thing or two to say about the actress who portrayed her: Camilla Luddington seemed completely miscast for the role she was given.

Her posh accent did not suit Jo, who was supposed to have a hard-knock life, and all the efforts of the producers to deal with this by adding a few little jokes about it in the script did not help, but only drew more attention.

Today, however, the situation has changed tremendously, and fans admit to having grown very fond of Jo and her story.

While some fans have joked that this is what happens when the writers want to give her more to do than just say she used to live in her car, others really believe that was the main problem in the beginning.

Either way, it's great to see things change, especially since the show hasn't provided many examples of change for the better.

Over the years, both the writers and Luddington himself have done their best to create a wonderful story for Jo Wilson and make everyone root for her.

Now all fans are hoping to see from the end of season 19 and the upcoming season 20 is the development of Jo's relationship with Link, which could finally give her the ending she deserves.

Tune in to ABC on Thursdays to catch new Grey's Anatomy episodes and see how Jo Wilson's arc continues.
