Grey's Anatomy has never been too easy on fans' hearts when it comes to romance.
Characters have broken up and gotten back together more times than you can imagine, and only the lucky few of many have gotten their little off-screen happy endings.
Although there have been many ways to ruin relationships, the cruelest has always been the death of one of the characters.
This is the fate that befell the show's IT couple, Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd, forever scarring the hearts of their fans.
But it wasn't the first time this had happened. And it probably wasn't the most heartbreaking one, either.
Both Lexie Grey and Mark Sloan died tragically after being injured in the plane crash.
The end of their relationship perfectly captures its nature: although they were not perfect and made many mistakes along the way, they were always meant to be until death separated them.
As much as fans adore their relationship, they also know how many flaws each of the characters had, and how much better they could be for each other if their story wasn't so rushed from the beginning.
They met at the beginning of season 5, and by episode 16, they were giving each other ultimatums of sorts, which is far from healthy.
They made all the right moves, but they made them way too fast: at the end of season 5, Mark met Lexie's dad, and they started living together in season 6.
Considering the fact that less than a year ago Lexie had a crush on George and pretty much despised Mark, you can say that the decisions were rushed.
Fans believe that if the couple would just take it slower in the beginning, they could save each other some stress.
It is unlikely that this would have allowed them to somehow survive the fatal accident, but it might have given them a few more precious days of stability and romantic bliss that they deserved.
