It's a Tight Race, but [Spoiler] Emerges as the Worst The Boys Character
Despite his supposedly crucial role, he unfortunately fails to deliver.
The Boys, a superhero TV series created by Eric Kripke based on the comic book of the same name, has introduced viewers to many characters during its three-season run.
But many fans remain disappointed with its main character, Hughie Campbell, portrayed by Jack Quaid, considering him to be the worst character in the whole show. Yep, surprise-surprise.
Hughie is supposed to be the character the audience identifies with, which is a common trope for most TV shows, movies, and books.
His purpose is to represent the viewer in a different new world and fulfill their fantasies.
The problem is that he is just so generic and boring, passively dragged through the events of the show by his teammates who are much more capable than him, and gets a superhero girlfriend, Starlight, who is suddenly interested in him despite Hughie lying to her throughout the first season.
Compared to other unique and fleshed out characters like Butcher or Homelander, who are really interesting to watch, he looks especially bad.
One could argue that the point of his existence is to see the character grow stronger as he struggles with his own morals and traumas.
But the situation has only gotten worse over the course of the show, as he hasn't changed much and continues to be very predictable, using emotions instead of logic and acting like a little kid.
Some fans even feel insulted by such a poor portrayal of them, wondering if this whiny man-child is how the show's creators see their fanbase.
Most of Hughey's screen time could have been devoted to a variety of colorful characters who deserve it much more. Even The Deep, who is also weak but in an even more pathetic way, is an interesting and novel character.
"[...] Hughie is the weakest link in the show. His presence detracts from the show by taking up screen time that could be used to watch Stormfront and Homelander be horrible people. Honestly I was hoping that Starlight killed him in S2E3 because I just found him annoying," Reddit user SalmonCrusader said.
The release date for The Boys season 4 has not yet been announced.
