Is Taika Waititi's 'Star Wars' Film Really Happening?
'Love and Thunder' helmer is supposed to write and direct a new project set in a galaxy far, far away, but his recent comments make it seem like it's not that simple after all.
In recent years, the New Zealand director has gained quite a royal status in Hollywood, having created the hugely successful 'Thor 3' and produced a number of well-received films and TV series. And it looks like Disney wants to continue its partnership with Waititi by hiring him to create an entirely original 'Star Wars ' movie set in a previously unexplored period, with entirely new characters and exciting new locations. Fans expect a lot from this as-yet-untitled film, but the director himself is not yet sure if it can become a reality at all.
Talking to the New York Times, Waititi shared an update on his mysterious 'Star Wars' movie, saying that creating a pitch for producers is not as easy as one might expect.
"I'm trying to write the 'Star Wars' idea at the moment. I've got to see how that goes, because once I submit it, that might determine when it gets made or if it gets made, even," Waititi said.
It feels like even though Waititi's project was originally confirmed by Lucasfilm, the official green light will only be given after a meeting with producers, which could go wrong quite easily. Despite this news indicating that the movie won't be released in the next couple of years, fans are perfectly fine with Waititi taking his time to develop his idea, hoping that he will create something truly original.
"Personally I don't really care if the movie takes 10 years to make just as long as it's actually new and has enough time to develop into its own thing instead of relying on legacy characters or stories for its backbone," – @OuterRimCan.
However, some are skeptical of the idea, fearing that Waititi might ruin the entire franchise with his trademark writing style.
