Is Sherlock BBC Coming Back? All Key Players Lowkey Want to Return

For how hectic it was in the last two seasons, BBC’s Sherlock had an amazing run, amassing millions of fans around the globe — and not just any fans but those willing to wait for two years every time just to get three episodes in return. That’s some serious dedication, and deserved one, too: BBC genuinely revived the classic story, and suddenly, everyone wanted to make their own spin on Holmes and Watson.

Sherlock BBC ended its run seven years ago, in 2017 — but admittedly, it could return! There’s just a slight catch.

Everyone Wants Sherlock Back, but It’s Hard

As much as Sherlock fans would do anything to get their favorite show back, its creators and key players would also love to see it revived. Recently, Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat sat down with Metro UK and spoke about the iconic series’ potential return, pointing out that there’s only one major speedbump on that idea.

“As I’ve said before, I’d do it tomorrow! I mean, Arthur Conan Doyle wrote 60 novels, [and] it’s not a format that will wear out. Sherlock Holmes will never wear out. I’d love to do it again. I would absolutely love to again. I’m easy, but you need to get the two big stars. That’s the problem,” Moffat explained.

Previously, his co-creator Mark Gatiss and lead star Benedict Cumberbatch also expressed their desire to jump back into the TV show in other interviews. But do they want it badly enough to make space for Sherlock in their busy schedules?..

Sherlock Should Be Rebooted, Not Continued

Here’s the deal. The first two seasons of Sherlock BBC were amazing, spectacular, and perfect in every way. But the third and especially the fourth were more like fever dream-induced fan fiction at best. This does not render the entire show useless, but it does mean that simply continuing it from the same point in time just wouldn’t cut it.

If Sherlock is ever to return, the creators should either backtrack to the finale of S2 (or S3, which would be less preferable) — or reboot the series entirely, with the same actors and characters. There are, indeed, countless Holmes and Watson stories to explore, and it would only be right to abandon the fan fiction approach and take those old classics for a modern spin. BBC’s Sherlock is good at it.
