Can he still be salvaged?

While there are many things viewers hate about Grey's Anatomy, there are even more things they are drawn to. From the great acting by both the seasoned veterans and the newcomers to the drama that no soap could come up with, the show remains the longest-running medical procedural for a reason.

One character in particular, however, is the most difficult for viewers to understand. While they may be drawn to the story, his appearance usually makes any arc unbearable to watch. In the case of Grey's Anatomy, the fandom's hatred for Owen Hunt doesn't get any better because of poor writing decisions.

While the way Owen treated Cristina (and every other woman in his life, for that matter) is the primary reason viewers hate him, and the blame was always on the writers for making him the way he is, in some cases they have outdone themselves in painting him as a villain, whether it was intentional or not.

Although Grey's Anatomy had many moments where people acted out of character to better fit the narrative, Owen Hunt could be crowned as the king of that title. Discussing the most prominent OOC moments of the characters, the Grey’s Anatomy fans on the r/greysanatomy subreddit mentioned his name way more than once.

For example, to this day, viewers of the show find it hard to understand how cheating on Cristina, even if hurt by the abortion news, was consistent with Hunt's craving a sense of family and stability.

“I know people love to hate on Owen but him being a cheater literally makes zero sense for his character and I will die on that hill. The writers should have let the abortion break their relationship as it does for a lot of couples,” Redditor smelltramo said.

Perhaps the show, seeing the character's plummeting ratings, wanted to portray him as macho, with too many women at once competing for his affections. However, seeing him quite literally fly from one bed to another didn't make Owen Hunt any more appealing to female audiences.

Right now, Owen Hunt is still the most hated character in the fandom. But even after all these years, there's still a tiny chance that things might change in season 21. So, if you're interested in seeing how it goes, keep an eye out for all the Grey's Anatomy news and behind-the-scenes updates.
