The series boss remains cautiously optimistic.

Summary:

  • Despite the concerns of many viewers, Grey's Anatomy remains the longest-running medical procedural.
  • The show just premiered its 20th season, and fans are wondering if it will be the last.
  • According to new showrunner Meg Marinis, there has been no sign of cancellation.

No matter how many years pass, Grey's Anatomy remains one of ABC's mainstays and one of the most recognizable American TV procedurals in general. Whether you are a fan, have stumbled across a few episodes while channel surfing, or have never seen a single frame of it, you know what Grey's Anatomy is.

Of course, for a show of such caliber, reaching the 20-year milestone is a big deal. While the upcoming anniversary season will be a celebration with some familiar cases returning, fans can't help but wonder if Grey's Anatomy will continue past this mark.

On the one hand, ending now, after the 20th season, would have been the best way to wrap up the show. On the other hand, it is incredibly hard to say goodbye to all the beloved characters who have been there from the beginning, as well as those who have joined over the years. Grey's new showrunner, Meg Marinis, has her own insight on the matter.

So far, ABC has not commented on the renewal or cancellation of Grey's Anatomy. The show just premiered its first episode on Thursday, March 14, so the network will likely want to see more numbers. However, showrunner Meg Marinis does not intend for the upcoming season to be the last.

Speaking to Deadline about all the nuances of season 20, Marinis explained how she views the uncertainty of the show's renewal and works around it while planning for the new storylines that may or may not come to fruition down the road:

“I’ve not been informed that this is the last season so I’m going to keep going and telling stories as long as they let me. We still have stories to tell. We receive a tremendous amount of support from the studio and the network and from Shondaland. So I’m going to keep going until they tell me to put that pen down.”

Although this is her first season as Grey's Anatomy showrunner, Meg Marinis is not new to the show. She's been with the production for the past 18 years, so if there's one person who can spot some dangerous ideas coming from the studio, it's her. However, it doesn't seem like the show is in any danger right now.

If Grey's Anatomy continues to move forward at the pace of the season 20 premiere episode, there won't be any problems to come. Be sure to tune in to Grey's Anatomy on Thursdays on ABC, and be the first to know about the show's renewal.
