A completely new era is coming for CBS’ long-standing police procedural franchise.

NCIS: Hawai’i’s sudden cancellation earlier this year caused a huge fuss, leaving the show’s fans no other choice but to call CBS out for ditching one of its most successful series. But several months later, the network’s weird decision actually appears to be a blessing in disguise.

Don’t get me wrong, NCIS: Hawai’i’s ending with a major cliffhanger that will never be explained is still a shame that the franchise’s lovers will be reminding CBS of for months or even years to come. However, the scrapped show now looks like one of the last steps towards ending NCIS’ obsolete era which is soon to be followed by a radically new one.

Canceled after only 3 seasons, NCIS: Hawai’i has officially joined the list of all the spinoffs that NCIS created and then abandoned for some reason.

Before the future spinoffs titled NCIS: Origins and NCIS: Tony & Ziva came around, the franchise kept sticking to its pretty weird tradition of basing its shows only on the location that will be featured in there while NCIS’ other departments and characters had no real importance.

At some point, this formula seems to have failed as the franchise currently has only one recurring location-based spinoff, NCIS: Sydney, while others like NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans and NCIS: Hawai’i have all been canceled at different times.

However disheartening it would sound for those who really enjoyed NCIS’ unfairly scrapped shows, their cancellation actually may be signaling a new chapter for the whole franchise, which is likely to find even more success with the viewers.

Having let almost all of its location-based spinoffs go, NCIS is now set to test a different take on the beloved story since both of its upcoming new shows don’t have anything to do with their location whatsoever.

Instead, the spinoffs will put their focus on their lead characters’ stories, something much more compelling than just a mere depiction of life inside one of NCIS’ departments, especially given that characters like Leroy Jethro Gibbs or Tony and Ziva may have a lot to unveil after having quitted the flagship series.

Sadly enough, NCIS’ new era had to arrive at NCIS: Hawai’i’s expense, yet there’s still a chance for some of the show’s characters to get their own spinoff sometime in the future.
