Is it possible to dislike the most iconic character in the superhero genre and still make the best superhero project of recent years? Turns out, yes.

Robert Kirkman is a screenwriter best known for his comic books The Walking Dead and Invincible, which have now been adapted into successful TV projects.

Today, Robert Kirkman is a millionaire who runs his own company that publishes other authors' work and produces TV series and movies. Despite all this, Kirkman continues to write new stories, experimenting with different genres and maintaining high quality.

Invincible Is a Breath of Fresh Air in the Genre

The 2010s saw a boom in superhero movies, mainly due to Marvel Studios, which set trends in the presentation of powerful heroes in cinema. For the first time, viewers saw how superheroes could lose their loved ones, die, and even get stuck on the other side of the universe.

But Amazon Prime offered something new — with The Boys and Invincible. By 2023, comic book movie fans were talking about genre fatigue, the peak passed with Avengers: Endgame, and the genre's uncertain future — even with James Gunn 's big plans to reboot the DCEU.

At the same time, even the harshest critics of the superhero genre admit that Amazon Prime is getting it right. Invincible continues to garner positive reviews, while every other comic book movie is released to a pile of criticism.

Robert Kirkman Is Not a Fan of Batman

And of course Kirkman deserves a lot of credit for that. At the same time, although he works in the superhero genre, he is not very close to its cult figures. In the back cover of The Walking Dead Deluxe #91, Kirkman wrote that he once drew Batman and was not satisfied:

“I drew a picture of Batman. Gross. I'm not a corporate guy. And really, in general, I'm not really a Batman fan.”

Although Batman and Superman are cult and inseparable images of the genre, it is not surprising that the creator of the most important (anti)superhero project of recent years does not have warm feelings towards them.

Invincible mocks and reconstructs classic superheroes: There is a parody of the entire Justice League and a demon detective as a cross between John Constantine and Hellboy.

So far, Invincible captures and develops the best of the superhero genre. At the same time, it remains an adult and relatable story about universal issues: love, envy, revenge, friendship, war and peace.
