But just as popular on Prime was the animated series Invincible, which tells the story of a superpowered teen whose father is the most powerful man on Earth. Based on the comic book of the same name, published by Image Comics from 2003 to 2018, the show immediately captivated viewers with its unconventional and even provocative approach to the genre.

And now, yesterday, April 4, 2023, the final episode of the second half of Season 2 was released. The new episode came as a complete shock to viewers, providing an incredibly violent ending and changing the title character forever. Most critics received the finale warmly, which, despite a number of minor cliffhangers hinting at future seasons, provided one of the most epic and influential battles in the history of the superhero genre.

The Wild Finale of Invincible Season 2

The final episode of Season 2, titled 'I Thought You Were Stronger', gave us the ultimate confrontation between Mark and Angstrom Levy, which proved to be not only pivotal in shaping the protagonist's views on the reality created in part by Omni-Man, but also incredibly brutal.

For the first time in his life, Mark crossed a line by finding it necessary to kill an enemy. Furious that Angstrom had threatened to kill his mother and brother, Mark decided to eliminate him, even though Angstrom claimed to be so much stronger than Invincible that the protagonist was no match for him.

As a result, Angstrom became nothing but a blood clot, and it had a very damaging effect on Mark. After breaking his no-kill rule and losing control, he once again succumbed to the fear that he would turn into the same cruel and ruthless man his father was. And as we know, this psychological barrier is not unfounded, for in alternate realities, Mark has indeed followed in Nolan's bloody footsteps.

What Are Critics and Audiences Saying?

Most professional critics were favorably impressed with the last episode. IGN, for example, gave the finale a 7 out of 10, praising the deep focus on Mark's emotional state, though not appreciating the many plot detours. Leila Latif of The Guardian gave the episode 5 stars, praising the animation, the acting, and the atypical plot twist. Inverse's Eric Francisco, for his part, noted that Season 2 proved to be everything that undermines the notion of 'superhero fatigue'. Overall, Season 2 has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

'To me, this is the second-best episode of the series, right behind the Season 1 finale. The first third is excellent with finally having to deal with the big baddie. The second third, if you ask me, is equally as excellent with a lot of trauma and it shows that Invincible, similarly to Bojack Horseman, is willing to have its big climatic events come first, with some cooldown coming after,' someone wrote in a review for IMDb.
