The network is taking an unexpected step to boost its profitability.

Even though The CW announced some pretty big and ambitious changes almost a year ago, in August 2022, fans haven't really noticed much change in the network's content.

It takes time to come up with something new, just like it takes time to negotiate a good deal on something that already exists.

Brad Schwartz, who is now The CW's President of Entertainment, seems to have hit the jackpot with The CW's addition of Canada's Son of a Critch to its slate of shows.

If Schwartz's enthusiastic approach is to be believed, the show will be as big a hit as Schitt's Creek was. Otherwise, it's going to be a fun ride for both the viewers and the production team.

Judging by his comments to Deadline, Son of a Critch is more of a personal throwback for Brad Schwartz, as he got to work with Andrew Barnsley, who exec produced Schitt's Creek, and now is a part of the new project's team:

"Andrew and I had a ton of fun and success together on Schitt's Creek, and I can't wait for everyone to see his newest hilarious and heartwarming series. Son of a Critch is a truly unique family comedy about adolescent adventures and those awkward and relatable growing pains."

For a network that has been known to cater to a very different audience, the decision may seem bold, but it is also a smart one.

The ambitious plan to make the network actually profitable by 2025, which was implemented after The CW moved under media giant Nexstar, is still in the works, so this looks like one of the steps.

Whether or not the happy reunion will result in the much-needed numbers for the network, we'll have to wait and see.

What is certain is that this slightly awkward but good-humored coming-of-age show will find an audience on U.S. screens, just as it did in Canada.

Son of a Critch is scheduled to premiere on the CW in the summer of 2023. Stay tuned for more news and a release date announcement!
