Inside Out 2 Already Has a Giant Plot Hole (But There's a Way to Solve It)
Do we all have the same number of emotions throughout our lives?
Summary:
- Inside Out 2 will introduce a new set of emotions for Riley.
- The new storyline may create a plot hole in the upcoming movie.
- Pixar has several ways to deal with the problem.
Pixar's Inside Out was released in 2015 and became one of the company's most popular animated films. The heartwarming story of a teenager named Riley struggling to deal with all the drama in her life using her emotions was so relatable that both children and adults enjoyed it.
Now, eight years after its release, Pixar has announced the second part of the movie with a new trailer and the upcoming movie has something very exciting for the fans. Apparently, Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear will have a new friend named Anxiety, and she may have brought a few more emotions with her...
Well, while it's not unusual for a teenage girl to have such an emotion (we all remember our chaotic teenage years), the new addition may have created a bit of a plot hole.
What’s The Problem With Anxiety?
The thing is, in the first movie, we not only got to know Riley's emotions, but we also got to see what was going on in the minds of her parents. And they all had the same set of emotions that Riley had. There was no Anxiety or other unfamiliar emotions, and that raises questions.
Also, at the end of the first movie, we got to see the inside heads of some other adult characters, and there was no sign of Anxiety there either. This makes the addition of the new emotion set, with its anxious leader, a bit confusing.
There's another thing that's bothering fans, and it's the fact that in Inside Out, Riley already had to deal with anxiety when she went to her new school, for example. She felt all kinds of emotions, and they were all covered by Fear. He listed all the things that could go wrong, and he panicked about every single one of them.
At the end of the trailer, Pixar also listed many other emotions, such as embarrassment, envy, and others, and all of them were experienced by Riley with the set of her previous five main emotions.
While there's no doubt that hardly anyone in the world doesn't feel worried or insecure, whether they're teenagers or even adults, it seems like there should be some sort of explanation for the entire existence of the new set of emotions, rather than the writers' inaccurate storytelling.
How Can Pixar Solve The Problem?
There are several ways to solve the new storyline detail that so far seems like a plot hole. For example, the most obvious choice is to make Anxiety and her friends just temporary emotions that come to teenagers when they hit puberty, and then make them disappear over time when the kids turn 18 or understand better how to deal with the world.
This way, the absence of the new emotion in the first movie will be justified, and it won't be a plot hole. As they grow up, all of the emotions for which Anxiety is responsible will just be scattered among the five main emotions.
Another way to deal with this is to maybe reveal that the parents do have these extra emotions, but over time they have become secondary and no longer live at the headquarters. Or maybe they have become some kind of ghost emotions that are always there but invisible and not controlled or able to control anything.
Either way, it would be a satisfying explanation for the new twist. For now, we just have to wait until Inside Out 2 is released on June 14, 2024.
