In 15 Years of Supernatural, The Winchesters Used This Item Only Once
They're lucky to avoid catching a cold this whole time, it could take the toughest of us.
Supernatural has had a long run at 15 years with many crazy obstacles on the path of the two main characters Sam and Dean Winchesters, portrayed by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles respectively.
They fought their way through various demons, but there was always one enemy they never fought: rain.
You'd think that wasn't intentional because we do get to see the Winchester brothers using their umbrellas once. Back in season 1, they had no problem protecting themselves from the unfortunate weather.
However, things changed very suddenly, and no umbrella was ever seen for the rest of the series.
The obvious answer to the question of why would be just the drama of it. After all, there are plenty of examples of beautiful cinematic shots of characters soaking wet in the rain.
However, the show's creator, Eric Kripke, went on to explain that the decision to stop using umbrellas was actually intentional.
Moreover, he had to discuss it with Kim Manners, who directed the episode Bugs in which the umbrellas were used:
"I called him, said 'the boys aren't scared of demons, but they're scared of rain?' From that point forward, a hard rule: no umbrellas," Kripke said, answering a fan question on Twitter.
Well, rules for thee…
"To be clear, I use an umbrella. So should you. It's just that fictional cowboy demon hunters look cooler without one," he added later.
With such a commitment to making the Winchester brothers look tough and cool, it is a mystery how the Bugs episode managed to stay uncut and with umbrellas on screen.
It's a good thing they did, though, because without that little slip we wouldn't get to know the motivation behind that detail at all.
If you want to re-watch Supernatural and find more details that went unnoticed, do so and stream the show on Netflix or HBO Max.
