Complex storylines are cool, but not that complex.

Almost all episodes of Criminal Minds have always been united by a consistent structure, an unchanging plot skeleton. Several similar crimes attract the attention of profilers at FBI headquarters. They go to the scene immediately, while the criminal is ready to continue his villainy.

After familiarizing themselves with the situation, the profilers identify patterns in the actions of serial killers, determine the trigger that caused them to break down, and announce the profile that the suspect must fit.

The Gold Star Case Became Too Convoluted

Like many procedurals, Criminal Minds had through-line plots that could last for several episodes. But none of them were as mysterious and intricate as the Gold Star case. Is it a person? Is it a terrorist group? Does it even exist?

Obviously, Gold Star has become the main case of the second season of Evolution – and with so many episodes to go, the writers are in no hurry to reveal details to the audience. And maybe they should hurry. Because I'm not the only one who doesn't understand what's going on with the Gold Star case.

“I’m waiting until the whole season airs now to finish it. They’re making it too convoluted and it’s more of a disaster than it is a twisty story line,” Reddit user Lioness-Rawr wrote.

The Most Plausible Theory About What Gold Star Is

The main theory about what is going on is as follows: Gold Star is a group of young adults who experienced some kind of psychological and/or physical trauma as children in a rehab or special center for troubled teenagers, probably the Stuart House, possibly funded by the state.

A group of five of these teenagers (the exact number is also unknown) somehow came into contact with Elias Voit and, after events that have not yet been revealed to us, became serial killers.

Perhaps the program these teenagers were in failed and they became a danger to society – forcing the state to hire the Sheriffs as assassins to get rid of the teenagers one by one. This may be where the name Gold Star comes from – a gold star is a badge the teenagers take from the Sheriffs they kill.

Obviously, the main key to solving the mystery of Gold Star is Voit – he clearly knows everything, or almost everything, about this organization.

Perhaps, maybe, and probably are the main words in this story, and that is obviously not a good sign. But maybe we will find out more in the next episode of Criminal Minds: Evolution – Episode 5 will drop on June 27th on Paramount+.
