If Gilmore Girls Nailed Realism With One Character, That Was Lane

If you have ever watched an episode of Gilmore Girls, you will probably agree with its fandom that the show was a great one. It had everything you needed to be entertained. It had the romance, the drama, the everyday career- and school-related struggles.

And more importantly, it had perspective. By following the lives of both the too-young mother, Lorelai, and the too-mature daughter, Rory, as well as their friends and family, viewers were able to see the whole picture, with no details left out.

The only thing that could make this show better would be a little more realism. However, there was one character whose poorly-written fate was actually overly realistic. Not by design, but just by accident. And this character turned out to be the real point of discussion for many fans.

Gilmore Girl’s Lane Deserved Better (Or Did She?)

It's not uncommon for people to get upset when their favorite characters get an ending that they don't think they deserve. For many viewers, the struggle Lane went through on the show hit very close to home, and they rooted for her as much as they rooted for themselves to escape.

Escape the destiny that seemed written for them, escape the rules and standards set by their controlling parents, and escape the constant financial struggle as they grow older.

Unfortunately, Lane's ending didn't make her a music superstar, and it didn't get her a big world tour. Instead, she had to finish the challenges of adolescence and jump right into the challenges of adulthood. Which is sad, yet... familiar. Almost as if her story turned out to be very similar to many stories of rebellious girls in small towns.

This idea was brought up on the r/GilmoreGirls subreddit and received a lot of support from some of the show's fans.

“I don’t think her outcome even sucks that much. Lane broke free from what was essentially a cult, and even was able to maintain a decent relationship with her mother. Zach is dumb and acts like a jerk sometimes, but he’s a decent partner and father. <...> Like it or not, Lane got a happy ending,” Redditor eggjacket said.

While some viewers agreed that the arc was realistic, others jumped into the discussion with the valid position that Gilmore Girls is the type of show one looks for an escape in, not a realistic portrayal of everyday flawed life.
