How & Where to Watch Monogatari Series in Chronological Order?
This may be the most confusing series of all.
With the recent release of another installment in the Monogatari series, Monogatari Series: Off & Monster Season, many people have become interested in the anime and are now ready to give it a try. However, understanding the best approach to watching the series is not an easy task in itself, as the series has had a rather unique release journey.
Would it be wiser to simply watch Monogatari in the order in which they were released? Or is there another guide viewers should follow to get a clearer picture of the story? Here's everything you need to know before approaching the franchise.
Does Monogatari Show Follow the Manga Order?
Written by Nisio Isin and illustrated by Vofan, Monogatari was first a manga series before it was adapted for the screen. Just like the show, the novels follow a vampire attack survivor, Koyomi Araragi, on her journey to help other people who can see supernatural entities and are often considered mad because of it.
The manga is meant to be read in the order of its publication, but the same cannot be said for the anime series. Due to various problems the studio had while putting the series together, and delays in production, all parts of the series were released in different order to match different parts of the manga.
In order to get the most out of your viewing experience, it would be wise to watch the episodes of the series in the order in which they appear in the manga. This would mean starting with Bakemonogatari and ending with the most recent show, Monogatari Series: Off & Monster Season. Here's the complete list:
- Bakemonogatari
- Kizumonogatari
- Nisemonogatari
- Nekomonogatari Black
- Monogatari Season 2 (Ep. 1-11)
- Hanamonogatari
- Monogatari Season 2 (Ep. 12-26)
- Tsukimonogatari
- Koyomimonogatari
- Owarimonogatari First Season
- Owarimonogatari Second Season
- Zoku Owarimonogatari
