How Many Episodes Are There in General Hospital Today, and Is It Renewed for 2025?

One of the biggest advantages of the soap opera genre is that these shows last for years and years, and fans don't have to worry about renewals. Because of their cheap production and volume of episodes, they remain profitable even after the genre took a sharp downturn in the mid-2010s.

Currently, there are 4 major soap opera titles still running on US television, and ABC's General Hospital is arguably not only the most popular, but also the longest-running of them all. Having been on the air since 1963, the show celebrated its 60th anniversary last year and is still going strong.

How Many Episodes Does General Hospital Have?

Considering that General Hospital's episodes air Monday through Friday and usually aren't interrupted by any major events, viewers can expect the show to air about 250-260 episodes in a year. However, General Hospital has been on the air for more than 60 years and has seen many major events that have changed the show's schedule.

June 22, 2022 marked another anniversary for General Hospital as the show passed the mark of 15,000 episodes. With that number in mind, the show is expected to have approximately 15,600 episodes by July 2024, but that number continues to grow each weekday.

No matter how disappointed fans may be with some of the show's storylines, General Hospital has become a multi-generational staple for many American families, so viewers are rooting for the show to continue. But now, more than ever, General Hospital's position at ABC is vulnerable.

Is General Hospital Renewed for Another Season?

While the executives behind all other major soap operas like Days of our Lives, The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful have made their intentions with the series clear in official renewal statements, General Hospital's producers are keeping quiet.

On the one hand, the show is expected to be safe from any major changes. On the other hand, fans could use a little something to keep their spirits up and reassure them that Port Charles and its residents aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

The interview that ABC President Craig Erwich gave to Soap Hub in February 2024 is the only thing that fans can hold on to for now:

“Because the stories are on, on a daily basis, they just become a part of people’s lives — and that’s the goal of ABC. <...> We remain deeply committed to General Hospital,” he said.
